Overview

Mentors inspire, encourage, and support you, and contribute to your professional and personal development. You can expect to strengthen and build your network, and gain the skills and confidence necessary to excel. You are required to reach out to your mentor at least one time per month.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Undergraduate students are eligible starting fall of their sophomore year and as late as fall of their junior year. 
  • Graduate students must have at least 3 full semesters remaining.
  • All interested students must attend an information session to have their application approved. 
  • You must have a minimum GPA of 2.25 to join.
    • If you are between a 2.0 and 2.25, please email mentor@xavier.edu with more information and the name and contact information of a Xavier faculty or staff member who can vouch for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I choose a Mentor? First finish your profile with complete information on what you are looking for in a mentor and also review potential career goals.. Then browse through the list of mentors to find someone who is a good fit. Send them a mentoring request with a personalized message. If you are unable to find a mentor who seems like a good fit, please contact mentor@xavier.edu. After an initial period of mentee choose mentor-we will allow mentors to reach out to mentees as well.
  • How long does the mentoring relationship last? Once you are matched with a mentor, they will remain your mentor until you graduate from or leave Xavier. If a mentor must leave the relationship early, we request as much notice as possible in order to search for a replacement mentor.
  • If the relationship is not going well or I am concerned about membership, what to do? We encourage letting the mentor know about the situation and contact mentor@xavier.edu. We will provide our full support to resolve the situation in a positive and satisfactory manner.

Student DO's

  1. Take responsibility to initiate the relationship.
  2. Take a proactive role in shaping the relationship.
  3. Understand what you want from the mentoring relationship and communicate your goals and aspirations to your mentor. Balance personal and professional relationship with your mentor.
  4. Set aside time for the mentoring process and keep all scheduled appointments with your mentor and display professional behavior.
  5. PUT THE TIME WITH MENTOR TO THE BEST USE. Come to meetings with mentor prepared with planned topics.
  6. Respond in a timely manner to your mentor's feedback. Respond to emails from your mentor at most two days after receipt.
  7. Be open and honest with your mentor about your challenges and weaknesses. 
  8. If something concerning the mentor needs to be discussed with others, it should first be discussed within the mentoring relationship.

Student DON'Ts

  1. Ask for advice on everything. Have a purpose in each request.
  2. Expect your mentor to find you a job or internship.
  3. Blame the mentor if his or her advice doesn't work out.
  4. Expect the mentor to know all the answers.
  5. Commit yourself to obligations you cannot keep.
  6. Cancel meetings/visits with your mentor at the last minute.
